Hirsch Sciences 6/7A

Welcome! My name is Mrs. Hirsch and I will be your child’s Sciences teacher. I am very excited about the year and getting to know each and every student.

Here are some of my classroom expectations and procedures for the year:

Students are expected to be ready for class daily with their classroom materials.  Each day students should make sure their iPads are charged at home and brought to class ready to use. There will be no plugging in during class.  A pencil and the given class work will also be needed daily as well as masks.  I suggest sending a few masks each day in case they get dirty and also have a bag to put the dirty masks into in order to separate them from the clean masks.

Assignments are expected to be legible and completed on time. You can find the homework and deadlines for assignments on google classroom as well as in the student agendas.  Each day the students will be expected to fill out their agenda and get it signed by an adult each night to ensure there is communication between the classroom teachers and parents. Through my website there is also a ‘chat’ button that you can access that will message me like a text message if you need to get ahold of me.

Parents will be notified of late assignments via the agenda or email if the assignment is not handed in. Homework is expected on the date that it is due before class starts and handed into the assigned bins. If the work is late there will be a deduction of marks daily.  First day -10%, Second -20%, 3rd -30% and 0% after that while still needing to hand in.

Students will have access to iPads and have a responsibility to use the devices appropriately.  Details of use can be found in the iPad contracts.  Should a student loose technology privileges, the student is responsible for accessing assignments not provided in print from the teacher.  This means asking peers to print readings, using print textbooks, etc.

Assessment

The Sciences mark on the report card is expressed as a percentage.  This percentage is derived from these components:

20 %    Math Content  (Assignments)

20 %    Science Content  (Assignments)

10 %    Math Tests & Exams

10%     Science Tests & Exams

20 %    Integration Projects

10 %    Participation & Appreciation

5 %      Technology Integration

5 %      Student Evaluation & Reflection

This year is a Science and math 6 year and will have a Provincial Achievement test at the end of the year.

There will be notes given daily along with demonstrations or activities.  Students NEED to keep track of their work throughout the year in order to study for PAT’s and final exams at the end of the year.

Here are the units that we will be studying this year:

As your child’s teacher, I wish to establish a working relationship with parents.  Having adequate time and a private place to address concerns is very important in building this relationship.  As such, if you have questions regarding homework, routines, behaviour or your child’s progress, please arrange a time to meet with me.  I cannot guarantee that I am readily available every day before or after school, and this is why we request that parents arrange meetings so that an appropriate amount of time can be dedicated to building this relationship.  It also allows me to gather information you may request and involve others who may have information or assist in addressing your concerns.

I am most easily contacted via email or through the webpage chat, as it is checked regularly and I will respond to emails as quickly as possible; ahirsch@capeisgreat.org (email) or https://ahirsch7.wixsite.com/ashley-hirsch (website).  Please note that during class time my priorities are students.  That means that I am unable to respond to emails, accept phone calls or meet with parents during class time.  However, if you email me, I will return your message when I am available.

Please read through this outline with your child and return the bottom portion of this form by Friday, September 4th, 2019, to indicate that you are familiar with the expectations of this class.

I also ask for an updated email address from you since this is the easiest way for me to communicate to you. I will email if there are any problems, concerns or praises that needed to be addressed.

Sincerely,

Ashley Hirsch
